Introduction

As I was finally getting around to finishing my PhD this past month, it occurred to me that it might be interesting to share my experiences as a woman in academia, especially since I already had two children as a graduate student. Perhaps it could serve as a useful example for other women in academia, especially in my field, astronomy.

On Monday, this week (6/21), I learned that I have cancer. The particular kind is called choriocarcinoma, and it's essentially a result of placental material gone wrong. The placenta I speak of nourished my younger child in utero.

So I guess this blog is going to be a bit more interesting than I thought it would be.
