Socks

Suddenly, I have a strange urge to try my hand at making five-toed socks.

...

Relatedly, my boys have expressed the desire for more handknit socks. The older one specifically wants multi-colored ones, and the little one will probably want whatever he sees his big brother getting. I'm thinking self-patterning yarn. I've got some long plane trips coming up, so I ought to get my hands on some yarn soon. Anybody got good recommendations for online vendors?

Out-of-control piggy toe socks!

I've not found an online store that has all possible sock yarns - I like Patternworks a lot, and it carries Austermann Step, Regia, Shepherd Sock, and some others, but not Opal. For variety and good pictures beforehand, you can't beat ebay, and I've gotten a lot of yarn from there.

I love those socks!! Do you happen to have a pattern for them?

They're in the Socks Socks Socks book, from a Knitters Magazine contest. If you only have one sock book, that's the one to have; the only quibble I have with it is that the patterns are sometimes a bit terse, to make them fit. (I could loan the book to you, but you seem to be in California, plus someone else is borrowing it right now, so I don't really have the pattern. :) )

I have that book! I've always thought those sock looked cute, but uncomfortable to wear, what with the buttons on the toes. Really, I'm looking for a mindless small project to take to conferences, so I don't want a complicated pattern anyway. But that's for the yarn suggestions!

Drat, failed to close a link there. :(
