Snow Day

Today has been declared a snow day by the county. After chipping 1/4" of ice off my car, I'm glad they decided to do that. The main road are fine, but the neighborhood streets are pretty treacherous.

Dropped the kids off at their schools' day care programs, which thankfully run on snow days. So now I can work from home in peace, in theory.

I suppose now is as good a time as any to post about how the job search is going.

I've put out more applications for faculty jobs than I care to count.

I made one short list so far, but didn't get the offer. This is a story in and of itself, but either I'm suffering from sour grapes or I really did dodge a bullet.

During the AAS meeting last week, I got promising nibbles from several places. I'll call them Euphemistic University, Elite New England Liberal Arts College, University of the Midwest, Southwest State, and Elite College Next Door to the In-Laws. Not much more to say until I get on a short list, though.

It really helps that this year I have a backup plan in case I don't get a faculty job, because I'm far more relaxed about the job search this year than in years past.

Perhaps I am being dense, but...

What is gained by calling a snow day and then opening the school and having the kids show up to daycare?

(Yes, I realize that the county calls the snow day and presumably the individual school opens the daycare, and the school knows more about its specific situation than the county does.)

It's a big county. Roads might be completely impassable upcounty, but just fine downcounty. And even when snow days are called, although students get the day off, often the school office staff don't.

Also, if it's a snow day, students don't *have* to be there. Which means that if a parent can't get safely in (and also doesn't have to work), the child hasn't missed a day of school. And if you have a probability of a lot of students out, that probably makes it a whole lot easier on the teachers.

From experience: yes. Yes, it does.

It's a tough job hunt situation, but you're doing great with putting in applications and doing all that research and networking. I guess you can only control so much, but it seems like that part you can influence, you've been hitting it out of the ballpark.

I'll just say that they *should* want you, good luck on them figuring it out.
