So, there are two divisions of my institution located here. And for the most part, the boundary is kind of fuzzy. We go to each others' seminars, eat lunch together, and even collaborate together.
But twice a year, we draw battle lines, and duke it out... on the soccer field.
I haven't played soccer since I was maybe 12. But this is a matter of pride. Our director insists that of course he doesn't hire postdocs based on soccer ability, but he does still care deeply about the outcome. So I played in this fall's Mud Cup, on the theory that taking up jogging has made me more fit than I've been in years. My soccer strategy seems to be that as long as I'm not able to have the ball myself, I might as well wear myself out chasing it down the field and harassing players on the opposite team that have the ball.
But we lost anyway. :(
Boy, did all that sprinting take a lot out of me. I was all hoarse afterward from both being out of breath and yelling my team on. And I expect I'll be sore all weekend. *phew*
