I-day

The nice thing about living in the DC area for one of the biggest Inauguration Days in history, is not just that downtown DC is an easy metro ride away, but also that I get the day off from work for it! So I braved a quick drive over to the metro station this morning... and drove right past it to my friend's house, because she's got a big screen TV and cable.

So no, I didn't freeze my tail off along with millions of my closest friends, but spent it in a warm living room. Unfortunately, I didn't get to hear much of Obama's speech because a four-year-old someone was whining for food, or drink, or scissors, or glue, or paper, or something.

So, now I'm going to go downstairs and see if our VCR did its job at noon.

Sarah Palin

I have a confession to make.

I like Sarah Palin.

From the clips I heard from her speech last night, she strikes me as eloquent and charismatic. She's got a sharp sense of humor. Also, I can't help but admire how much she has accomplished, all while facing the challenges of being a working mother.

But. BUT.

She advocates teaching creationism in schools. She would ban abortion under any and all circumstances, including rape, incest, and threat to the mother's health. She is against sex education and favors abstinence-only policies. She's a social conservative of the most extreme type.

Also, she isn't running for President. On nearly every single issue, I am with Obama rather than McCain.

So, while I like and admire Palin, I'm not going to vote against my own interests simply because I'd like to see a woman as VP.
