Strawberries, strawberries, strawberries
Jun. 5th, 2006 10:30 amDespite being barely able to walk upright after Friday's soccer game, we went strawberry (or "tawberee" as DS2 likes to say) picking on Saturday. We went to Butler's Orchard this time. They had an interesting system where they assigned pickers to specific rows, expecting you to pretty much pick everything over in your row. Makes sense, that way they don't have some areas completely overpicked and others barely touched.
DH, DS1 and I picked about 16 pounds of berries. DS2 ate about a quart right there in the field. He was wearing a white shirt and dripped the juice all down his front and arms, and we got lots of amused comments from passersby about how much he seemed to be enjoying himself. We also picked a couple of pounds of snap peas while we were there.
It's always a pleasant surprise each June to be reminded just how sweet and juicy and flavorful strawberries can be. I managed to process them all over the weekend, and now we have a freezer full of strawberries. Time to look up some recipes...
