Long lost book

When I was little, maybe 4 or 5, I got my first library card. I remember checking out the same book over and over again. I have clear memories of the style of the drawings, and remember precious few of the details of the story: his mom made him wash behind the ears before going into town to the library; something about the stone lions in front of the library -- did they come to life or something? I certainly couldn't remember the title.
Well, today the Newberry and Caldecott Awards were announced (featuring Neil Gaiman!) and on a whim I perused the Caldecott Awards... and there it was! It's one among the first Caldecott Honors to be awarded, Andy and the Lion by James Daugherty. At least, I think that's the book: definitely the drawings look right, but I'd have to read it again to be sure.
