Exploration

We finally got out today to explore the nearby trails. We did a loop that was about 5 miles or so total. It would have been better if DS1 had been willing to walk instead of be carried for 90% of the trip. The first half the trip, it was because DS2 was being carried in a backpack carrier. The second half, it was because he was exhausted, it being nap time.
I think I'm more out-of-shape than I'd like to be, since I got home feeling completely wiped. Both kids are in bed early tonight, so I guess the hike took something out of them, too. DH is still up and running around the house pretending to be an electrician, who knows where he gets the energy from.
In general, the hike was quite pretty. We got a good feel for the sorts of hikes we want to attempt in the future and we came across several places we'd like to go back to. Near the end of the hike, we came across several deer -- one young buck by itself, and a group of four which included a fawn.
The deer in the area in general seem to have no fear of humans. They all clearly heard and saw us, then went back to their grazing. I once saw a deer on the sidewalk ahead of me in broad daylight. It calmly watched me point it out to DS1, and only skittered off when it realized that we were going to keep coming down the sidewalk. I'm sure the local parks harbor lots of deer, since they have no natural predators and nobody's ever going to allow hunting that close to people's houses.
