Only just this week, my kids saw Star Wars: Episode IV for the first time.

For that matter, I don't think they've been exposed to any Star Trek yet.

In this musical that DS1 and I are involved in, there's a death scene, and during rehearsals the peanut gallery likes to interject, "I'm not dead yet!" and "He's only... *mostly*... dead." DS1 has no clue what they are talking about.

Thank goodness for netflix and multiple queues. Though I'm not sure that the kids are quite ready for Monty Python just yet...

any other suggestions for what to inflict on my kids?

I think you already put in the Princess Bride reference. And DS1 has already seen Totoro. And they won't be ready for Tampopo for at least a decade...

Hmm. Labyrinth is a classic, and still holds up well. Dark Crystal was a classic, but was painful to rewatch as an adult. Back to the Future at some point? Lots of the modern animations - Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Shrek, the Incredibles (but maybe they've seen them all already). Indiana Jones in a few years, perhaps. Willow? Black Beauty? The Last Unicorn? The Neverending Story was nice.

I don't think I've ever seen Dark Crystal or Last Unicorn.

Yes, they've already seen the all the modern animations you mention. And I seem to have already put Labyrinth, Willow and Neverending Story on the queue already. (Guess I'm not all that neglectful!)

Never seen Dark Crystal or the Last Unicorn.

And you've somehow reminded me that Tron should go on the list at some point.

the last unicorn is also a book, which I read a few years ago and also liked.
(I have to second labyrinth, as that was one of those movies my brother & I watched together a million times)
you can tell what generation I'm from, because I think the 1st ninja turtles movie is classic, but that might be the muppetry involved ;9 I also really liked short circuit.
I remember really liking escape to witch mountain, but it might be kind of dated. Have they seen the nightmare before christmas? do you want sound of music & wizard of oz kind of classic stuff? bedknobs & broomsticks, chitty chitty bang bang?
they're probably too young for red dwarf, huh?

Short circuit! Johnny 5!

They did enjoy Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I don't think they liked the Wizard of Oz as much. Their favorite movies seem to be things like the recent Winnie the Pooh movies. I also get the distinct impression that they are are spoiled by modern special effects and computer graphics. Kids these days.

I was very fond of Hammy the Hamster, which we got through Canadian TV. It's probably even the right age for your kids.

I also quote VeggieTales, though they have religious content.

Things like Time Bandits and Monty Python, yeah, maybe when they're older. The Perilous scenes might be a little hard to explain.

Look, netflix even has Hammy the Hamster available!

The religious content of Veggie Tales bothers me. Especially since DS1 has already loudly asserted that he doesn't believe in God. :)

Oh, beware! The Hammy the Hamster NetFlix has is the recent remake. I can't speak to that. I watched the early 70s version. As long as GP still has his diving bell, though, it should be good. :)

And I added Time Bandits to the grown-ups' queue because I don't think I've seen it...

No? It's the source of the famous quote, "Don't touch it! It's EEEEEVIL!" It's fun. :)

How about the Muppets? It's absurdist humor that's appropriate for kids -- a good warmup for introducing them to Monty Python someday.

And by Muppets I mean old episodes of The Muppet Show -- I don't think any of the movies (or more recent shows) are as wonderfully bizarre as the original show.

We own a few episodes of the old Muppet Show on DVD already. But I understand that entire seasons are now available, and I'm seriously tempted to go buy them -- for myself as much as the kids!
