Sarah Palin

I have a confession to make.

I like Sarah Palin.

From the clips I heard from her speech last night, she strikes me as eloquent and charismatic. She's got a sharp sense of humor. Also, I can't help but admire how much she has accomplished, all while facing the challenges of being a working mother.

But. BUT.

She advocates teaching creationism in schools. She would ban abortion under any and all circumstances, including rape, incest, and threat to the mother's health. She is against sex education and favors abstinence-only policies. She's a social conservative of the most extreme type.

Also, she isn't running for President. On nearly every single issue, I am with Obama rather than McCain.

So, while I like and admire Palin, I'm not going to vote against my own interests simply because I'd like to see a woman as VP.

I like her too. Almost no one I have talked to likes her, and it really perplexes me.

Yeah, I like her fine as a person. I also don't hate McCain the way I hated both George W and John Kerry on a personal level. But I'm in the same boat as you - I can't vote for her positions on the issues.

Yeah, she totally passes the "I'd have a beer with her" test, assuming I drank beer. And yet, that doesn't seem to dictate how I vote.

Beer is good! I'd have a beer with most people, even the annoying ones, because hell, they can't be that annoying when you have a beer!

I don't know enough about her to know whether I like her or not (although, it feels weird to "like" someone I've never met, and probably never will meet).

But, like you say, liking someone is not the same as thinking they will make a good Pres or VP. I can make a looooong list of people that I like a great deal who would make crappy POTUS :).

I don't like her, not in any meaningful sense, because my friend who lives in Alaska tells me she's a pretty miserable leader.

For me there was a brief connection when she said "I will be the advocate for special needs children in the White House." And, unrelated to politics, I liked seeing Piper smoothing down Trig's hair with her spit. However, I am horrified by her views on most things. And I don't know how she would advocate for special needs children while shrinking the government and taking away the insufficient funds that already exist for these kids. Sigh.
