The stone is called ammolite. We got it while on vacation in Quebec. It's remarkably hard to take a good photo of it, since it's iridescent, but I managed to at least capture some of the colors in this photo.
And yes, shiny!!! All those single-color gems I looked at were boring by comparison. :)
