I'm back

Got back today from visiting my parents. For now, I will post highlights. I'll try to elaborate in subsequent posts, but no promises.

  • Took the train out and back instead of flying. It was an overnight train, and we sprang for a room, which made things pretty comfortable. All in all, it wasn't so bad, it was even kind of fun. DH definitely enjoyed it just as much as either kid.

  • Had a little Easter Egg hunt for the kids. My mom got the boys a gazillion stuffed animals, too, but I managed to "forget" to pack them.

  • Didn't go to church with my mom on Easter, which I think disappointed her, but at least we didn't get into any fights. Maybe that's because I didn't actually spend a whole lot of time with her.

  • My mom kept trying to convince DH and me to go out and do stuff by ourselves so she could monopolize the kids. Which kind of bothered me for some reason. Maybe because I don't quite trust my parents with my kids.

  • Met up with an old friend from high school. She's a born-again Christian who voted for Bush because of moral values. And she believes in Creation. And she's studying to become a high school chemistry teacher. We had a lively discussion over dinner that I found quite illuminating. And we're even still friends.

  • Gave the Astrophysics Seminar at a nearby (only 1.5 hour's drive) from my parents'. Felt all grown up, being treated to lunch and dinner and meeting with faculty and all. The talk went okay, I thought.

  • Discovered that my parents have now fully assimilated to life in the country. They have five cars in their driveway. One has a completely flat tire. Another has no plates. Next time I visit I expect to see them up on blocks.

If anyone actually cares, details of my trip will be back-dated, which I think means it won't show up on your friends' pages. You'll have to look at my actual journal instead. Nyah.

Would you by any chance be willing to elaborate? Some of my high school friends are religious conservatives and creationists, and I keep avoiding the science topic with them.

You know, I bet your friends would be perfectly happy to talk about religion and Creation with you under the auspices of trying to convert you. But then again, it might be hard to stay friends with them...
