Just got back from a camping trip with the family. It was, in part, a Father's Day gift for DH, in that I secured the campsite and made the reservation coincide with FD, but then I lamed out and failed to look up any activities in the area. But fortunately, DH was psyched enough to look things up and find places to visit.

We camped on the shore of Deep Creek Lake, which is a name with too many nouns, but oh well. It's out in Western Maryland, at the tippity-tip of the panhandle, surround by West Virginia to the south and Pennsylvania to the north. Pretty area. Rolling hills. Twangy accents. Then again, I think I've decided that everyone in rural areas speak with twangs, whether it's Maryland or Vermont.

Two parents busy setting up camp plus one active toddler who likes to climb and get into things plus one pre-schooler who thinks having accidents is a great way to get attention when he feels ignored do not add up to an easy camping trip. But we all survived, no one killed anyone else, or themselves for that matter. And I think we all even had a good time overall.

It was raining when we arrive Thursday afternoon, but luckily we had use of a lean-to with a sound roof and DH has the super-power of starting fires with wet wood. Luckily, it stayed dry for the rest of the trip. Friday, we went on a trip on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which was pretty cool. I'd never seen a coal-burning train in action before. DS1 was not so excited about the trip itself, probably because all there was to see was boring old scenery, but he was competely entranced by watching the train turn around at the station stop.

Saturday and Sunday we went on a few short hikes. The problem with hiking with the kids is that both insisted on being carried for almost the entire time. The backpack carrier works great with DS2, until he insists on being carried by daddy, and then DS1 is too heavy for mommy to carry for very long, so daddy ends up getting stuck with both kids. So, we stick to short hikes, less then a couple of miles. Saturday, we went to see Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's highest waterfall, which was pretty and all, but maybe only the height of a 3-4 story building, so I guess that tells you something about waterfalls in Maryland. We followed that up with another short hike in Cranesville Swamp just across the border in West Virginia, just to say that we've been to WV. Sunday we went for a hike in the Catoctin State Forest, to Wolf Rock. We could have gone out to Cunningham Falls, but it was on the long side and besides, we'd just seen the Highest Falls In The State. Unfortunately a good bit of it was uphill, but it was a neat rock formation, worth the trek out.

And now we are home. And I still need to get the boys ready for daycare/day camp tomorrow. And I should catch up on email. But I'd really rather just loaf around with a cold Mike's Hard Lemonade.

Hey, I know Deep Creek Lake :). It's a pretty popular retreat for people from my hometown.
