An engineer walks into a bar...
Feb. 22nd, 2005 09:57 amI was reading my email this morning, first going through the AASWOMEN newsletter, which seemed to be mostly about Larry Summers and fallout from his remarks. The overall message seemed to be that the workoholic culture of science, especially at the highest levels, is a huge deterrent to women.
Three messages later, I get a series of jokes about engineers. The engineers in the jokes are all male. Several of them refer to the engineer's preference of working in the lab over women.
For some reason, this really hit the message home. Techies are men, and they have no time for families.
