I wish I didn't have to be gracious when finding out that I'm not getting the job I applied for. Because really, what I want to say is,

"Yeah? Well, FUCK YOU TOO!"

...

I should warn those of you who may not be familiar with academic job cycles that I am going to be applying for jobs rather intensely this fall. I won't know the results of the job search until next spring. If I don't land a tenure-track job by then, I will likely be leaving astronomy. So yeah, I expect to be totally stressed out.

Heh, I just realized that I should have written this like a teaser for this fall's New Exciting Reality Series: "Who Wants to Be A Professor?"

- 100 Applicants, 1 Job. Who will make the cut?
- Clips of desperate postdocs schmoozing with Big Shots at conferences
- Will A/V problems totally ruin Astra's talk?
- "And the short list is...." [cue dramatic music]
- Screams of agony/triumph, as appropriate

Yeah. I can hardly wait.

Given that I and my peers here usually call the rejection notices "PFO letters" (i.e. "Please Fuck Off"), I think it's an entirely reasonable response. :)

Good luck with the job hunt. I feel your pain.

Sounds ... awful. Here's hoping you emerge serenely as Prof. Astra about a year from now. If not ... come back to Boston and knit?

*hugs* I've had the "Yeah? Well? Fuck you too!" response a couple of times in the last two months.

Good luck with the hunt.
